Metchosin is painted, sculpted, drawn and woven at a new exhibition dedicated to the region.
Visions of Metchosin opens Friday at the Metchosin Art Gallery. It's the second exhibition for the new art space, located in the old Metchosin school library.
"We have many different interpretations of the district," said curator Hailey Finnigan. "We have sculpture, fibre art, painting, mosaics, even calligraphy."
A jury comprising painter-printmaker Lorraine Betts, gallery director Fran Willis and painter Jeremy Herndl selected works for the show from more than 100 submissions.
Finnigan said Visions of Metchosin is a way to build a relationship between the gallery and its community.
"I thought it would be a fun way - because we're a brand-new gallery - to say 'hi' to the community, put on a show about Metchosin, and it's also great that it's at a time that coincides with Metchosin Day."
It doesn't mean future exhibitions will be limited to local artists, however.
"My programming is always going to keep in mind the community, but I'm hoping to show artists from all over," she said.
The non-profit gallery's first show, a retrospective of artist Maggie Cole's work, opened Aug. 2.
The contemporary art space was created by the Metchosin Arts and Cultural Association.
