Tom Cruise's sci-fi thriller All You Need Is Kill, in which his character repeatedly relives humanity's last stand against a brutal and ruthless horde of aliens, will open on March 14, 2014, Warner Bros. announced Monday.
The film, based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel of the same title and co-starring Emily Blunt, is directed and executive produced by Doug Liman. It comes from Warner Bros. Pictures, which will distribute it, as well as Legendary Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.
The film has just begun production, and will be the first to be shot at the recently christened Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.
All You Need is Kill takes place in a near future in which hive-like aliens called mimics have killed millions and destroyed cities. Inexperienced Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is dropped into a suicide mission in which he is killed, but takes down an alien with him. But he then reawakens to relive his last day on Earth, again and again.
Just as Bill Murray's character in Groundhog Day learned to be more thoughtful, witty and romantic, Cage learns to be a better alienkiller. He fights alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has killed more mimics than anyone else.
Dante Harper, Christopher McQuarrie and Joby Harold wrote the screenplay.
