A motorist has been issued a $368 fine by Oak Bay police for 鈥渄ooring鈥 a cyclist after opening a vehicle door into the rider鈥檚 path.

Deputy Chief Mark Fisher said the cyclist escaped with minor injuries in the Oct. 7 incident, but there is potential for more serious consequences in such cases as there is huge risk of injury from falling or being knocked into traffic.

Fisher said a truck was parked on Monterey Avenue, near Oak Bay Avenue, about 8 a.m. The driver opened the driver-side door without checking behind him and the cyclist was hit, he said.

This is the first dooring offence Oak Bay police have seen, Fisher said.

In September, the fine for dooring a cyclist in sa国际传媒 jumped to $368 from $81.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a hefty fine,鈥 Fisher said.
