An unsanctioned picket line was set up outside a sa国际传媒 Post distribution centre entrance in Saanich on Friday morning, backing up traffic for a couple of hours.

The picket line formed by members of unrelated unions and others at the Glanford Avenue distribution centre was intended to protest the fact that postal-service employees were ordered back to work by the federal government after a 34-day strike.

Similar demonstrations have been held across the country.

“All workers in sa国际传媒 have a vested interest in their Charter rights being violated and losing their right to free and fairly bargain and strike,” said Kate Holowatiuk, president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 850 Victoria.

She said the demonstration, which started about 8:15 a.m., came as a surprise to her.

Workers weren’t prevented from entering but traffic was backed up along Vanalman Avenue.

Holowatiuk said she didn’t want to see any postal members disciplined, so she thanked supporters on the line but asked them to disband.

The picket was not hostile, said Holowatiuk.
