A section of Quadra Street in Saanich was limited to single-lane traffic in both directions as crews worked to address a damaged gas line on Monday.

Saanich police initially announced a full closure of Quadra Street from Union Road to Falmouth Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. due to a gas leak and asked people to avoid the area.

The street was reopened to traffic shortly after 11 a.m.

“Please be mindful of crews working in the area to address the gas leak,” Saanich police said in a statement.

FortisBC spokesperson Gary Toft said in a statement that the shutdown was the result of damage to a gas service line by a third party.

“This is a good opportunity to remind the public that the majority of damages to our gas system are preventable — always contact before digging to gather information on the location of buried gas lines and other utilities,” said Toft, who did not characterize it as a gas leak but rather as a “gas incident.”
