Nanaimo police release images of suspects in sailboat theft

The two are believed to have climbed over the gated entrance to the Townsite Marina docks at about 1:30 a.m. and taken a sailboat later found adrift in Departure Bay

Police are looking to identify two individuals who are believed to have broken into a Nanaimo marina and stolen a 45-foot sailboat that was later found adrift in Departure Bay.

Nanaimo RCMP said the two are believed to have climbed over the gated entrance to the Townsite Marina docks at about 1:30 a.m. on July 10.

Later that day, a 45-foot sailboat named the Soggy Dollar, which was moored in the marina, was reported stolen.

The sailboat was found the same day adrift in Departure Bay harbour, police said.

Police said there were reports of a zodiac inflatable boat leaving the sailboat while it was in Departure Bay.

Both the zodiac and the sailboat have been recovered by RCMP, and the owner of the sailboat has been notified, police said.

The first person of interest is described as white, 40-45 years of age, of medium build and height. The person was wearing a black puffy jacket, blue shirt, jeans and black baseball cap on July 10.

The second person of interest is described as white, 35-40 years of age, of thin build and medium height. The person was wearing a T-shirt with a large white logo and brown pants and carrying a bike tire in a security camera captured while he was walking down a dock walkway.
