Taylor鈥檚 talent clear from the beginning

Re: 鈥淟egendary sports columnist started at the Colonist in 1950s,鈥 Jan. 8. I was fortunate to share a newsroom with Jim Taylor in 1955, around the time we both landed jobs with the then-Daily Colonist. I was raw and challenged.

Plastic not good alternative to glass

Re: 鈥淔or Greater Victoria, recycling can be a pain in the glass,鈥 Jan. 3. It would be going backward to use plastic instead of glass containers. Glass containers are useful; I use some for freezing food, particularly the Adams Peanut Butter jars.

First Nations defend unceded territory

The RCMP are at the Unist鈥檕t鈥檈n camp, which is First Nations unceded territory. There has been no free prior informed consent to put a pipeline carrying fracked gas through their territory. They do not want it.

Fossil fuels have effects on health

We see a lot of articles and opinions in the sa国际传媒 about the economics of pipelines and fossil-fuel exports, but not so much about the related health costs.

He who slings mud loses ground

Re: 鈥淧opulists play on voters鈥 emotions,鈥 letter, Jan. 4. Some letters from on high really test the gag reflex. Those of us who have grasped Condescension 101 object when lectures filled with imperatives are pushed down our throats.

Show councillors you聽care about issues

Citizenship isn鈥檛 a privilege, it鈥檚 a responsibility. At least, that鈥檚 what my father taught me, and after all these years, I haven鈥檛 found anything to suggest he was wrong about that.

Programs support kids in crisis situations

Re: 鈥淭rudeau has no respect for taxpayers,鈥 letter, Jan. 6. It鈥檚 always unfortunate when emotions trump fact, as witnessed in Sunday鈥檚 letter. It鈥檚 OK to have opinions, but to use one鈥檚 hatred to mislead the public is pathetic.

Math on extinctions doesn鈥檛 add up

Re: 鈥淭hese species went extinct in 2018, more doomed to follow,鈥 Jan. 6. The author of this article claims that we are facing a 鈥渟ixth great extinction鈥 based on loss of species in 2018.

Make taxi system fair聽for all

Re: 鈥淲e don鈥檛 need second-rate taxis,鈥 letter, Jan. 4. The letter regarding not needing 鈥渟econd-rate taxis鈥 seemed close-minded, but does highlight the need for an even playing field.

Forests reflect our management of them

Re: 鈥淔orestry supply changing as climate, fires and bugs bite,鈥 Dec. 29. The story on the changing nature of sa国际传媒 forests cited bugs, fires and climate change as the primary causes of timber-supply shortages and mill closures.
