Thin whales mean smart salmon

Prey animals are always on the lookout for their predators. If I were a tasty salmon, I would certainly keep well clear of the sounds of whale-watching boats.

Shawnigan will likely need a cleanup, too

Re: 鈥淟aurel Point gets $17-million cleanup,鈥 Sept. 22. Ten or 15 years from now, a similar headline will likely appear in the sa国际传媒. Except the location of this future cleanup will be Shawnigan Lake, and the cost will be double, at least.

City should rethink electric-car parking

I drive an electric Nissan Leaf and use the Victoria parkades. For the most part, the city鈥檚 heart is in the right place. When you use the parkade you can plug your car in for free as long as you don鈥檛 go over three hours.

Geese are hissing at聽sa国际传媒 Hydro

Re: 鈥渟a国际传媒 Hydro shouldn鈥檛 be a social agency,鈥 editorial, Sept. 30. The editorial correctly focuses on the incapacity of sa国际传媒 Hydro to fulfil the complex role of a social agency.

Baseball fans not happy with coverage

I am very disappointed in the sa国际传媒鈥檚 coverage of Major League Baseball. It was the last day of the season and, as usual, the paper gave us a gripping story about the Toronto Blue Jays, who are 34 games out of first.

We need a system with new values

Re: 鈥淭raveller takes umbrage at rantings,鈥 letter, Sept. 22. In my view, the column by Trevor Hancock pointing out the long-term adverse effects of the values embodied by overconsumption was very well thought out and had tremendous merit.

Salt Spring powerless to stop pot operations

Re: 鈥淪alt Spring鈥檚 controversial pot factory,鈥 Sept. 30. We are appalled at the ease with which these grow-ops have sprung up, not only on North End Road.

New trade deal a聽reason to buy local

With regard to the new deal on supply management: It is a very small concession (3.6 per cent), and to those who are upset, I suggest when possible, buy Canadian, as I do. The same for shopping online.

Change trade acronym to CAMUS

The new acronym for NAFTA is unpronounceable. Try saying USMCA. I thought so. I suggest we change it to CAMUS, for three reasons. It slides trippingly off the tongue. The ironic existential allusion is delicious. Finally, it puts sa国际传媒 first.

Stop chasing people from park to park

Re: 鈥淐osts for Regina Park camp could add up to $1M,鈥 Sept. 26. Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell鈥檚 comment: 鈥淚 can鈥檛 think of a cost more unanticipated than a tent city,鈥 reveals that he is not paying attention.
